Walking Distance, Texas to Malaysia

The differences between countries lie in geographical distance. Overcoming the differences is challenging and can be rewarding. The differences between people lie in the heart. Overcoming the differences is more difficult but the rewards are worth the effort.

Why Texas and Malaysia?

We live and work in Malaysia. Presently employed by an oil company doing business here we have benefited from our interaction with the Malaysian people. Many times the differences between our cultures have caused us some concern but with time and a willingness to learn we have come to enjoy this country and its diverse peoples. Often the news from back home is disturbing to the Malaysians, news like the attack on Afghanistan and the presidential indescretion, and the news from here is sometimes disturbing to us and other Americans, news like the embassy here closing temporarily and the local political differences that are sometimes aired. To diminish the importance of such news would not be fair reporting. But also to inflate the importance of such news above the value of the contributions of the hard working people of both countries would be to diminish the real value of the countries.

This site is dedicated to introducing both countries to some of the best we have seen and done. Despite the differences there is so much we have in common we feel it is worth exploring and continuing to learn from each others cultures. We will continue to add pictures and links to other sites in both countries so you can find out and enjoy some of what we have found. Texas and Malaysia are both great places to visit, live and work. Some might argue that Texas is not a country but that is probably because they haven't visited there or lived there. I grew up in Texas and, believe me, it is a country all its own. I am also a proud American and am glad to have been given the opportunity to meet and learn from the peoples of Malaysia.

Living in Malaysia

There are a lot of differences between Texas and Malaysia. The climate in Malaysia is always warm and humid. It is truly a tropical country just a few degrees above the equator. Local fresh fruit is always available on the roadsides and in grocery stores. The ethnic mix in Malaysia is approximately fifty percent Malay (Bumiputra - Sons of the soil), thirty-five percent Chinese and ten percent Indian with the remaining percentage made up of Phillippino, Thai and others. Tori, the granddaughter that accompanied us to Malaysia, doesn't know the difference between people. She accepts all on a as come as is basis. She knows no enemies and fears no one. She is three and a half years old and has many friends in Texas and Malaysia.
